Ergothioneine is an amino acid that is found mainly in mushrooms, as well as red and black beans. It is also found in animals that have eaten grasses containing ergothioneine. In 1909, French pharmacist Charles Tanret isolated it from ergot (the sclerotium of Ergot fungus Ergot and Ergot microcephalus), hence the name. The INCI name is Ergothioneine, or “EGT” for short. As a natural antioxidant, chiral amino acids have remarkable antioxidant and anti-aging effects, which have been recognized by GRAS in the United States and listed as new resource foods by the European Union.
Mechanism Principle:
Main energy source of somatic cells is adenine nucleoside triphosphate (ATP), which is generated by the transformation of fatty acids in mitochondria of energy plants. Its energy generation leads to the generation of free radicals, and Ergothioneine can effectively remove free radicals and protect mitochondria.
The mitochondria of keratinocytes are green when they work normally.
When the cells were treated with biochemical reagent alloxan, a large number of reactive oxygen free radicals ROS were released to kill mitochondria, and the cells turned yellow.
When cells were treated with EGT and alloxan at the same time, mitochondria were effectively protected, indicating that free radicals were eliminated, so cells were protected.
